The first time I saw my own aura I was a bit skeptical that I was actually seeing it.
I rationalized that I was ‘making it up,’ possibly even hallucinating.
A few weeks earlier I had heard about the concept of auras which piqued my interest.
I am an explorer by nature — I like to dig a little deeper into the unknown and make my own judgments on things.
So I decided that I would try to find a way to see my own aura (if that was even possible).
After a quick google search, I stumbled upon some starter instructions that claimed it was possible to learn how to see your own aura.
Well, you don’t know till you try, so I ventured to try this out despite not being a firm believer in this concept…(yet:)).
Here are the steps I followed:
Start by focusing on your hand over a plain background
Slowly shift your focus to the perimeter of your hand (the space around it)
Keep gazing for several minutes at a time
Do this daily for a couple of weeks, as you are training your eyes to perceive the subtle light photons around your hand.
I practiced this for a week whenever I found a few private moments in my day.
I was cognizant that if someone walked in on me intensely staring at my hand it could be perceived as being a bit odd.
First couple of days, it felt like I was wasting my time.
But I kept going.
After about a week I started seeing energetic waves.
Like the heat waves you see radiating off things on a super hot day.
At this point, I am thinking I might be onto something.
So I looked for some next level tips on seeing auras.
The next part was to take time daily to stare into a mirror above and around my head.
I started doing this with caution because I figured walking in on someone intensely staring at themselves in the mirror might create a pause for concern.
I imagined my husband walking in on me, pausing, and moonwalking out of the room with the look on his face like he just walked in on something he wasn’t supposed to see.
At first, I saw nothing.
Just battled my own thoughts of it being weird to stare at the mirror so long.
When I released expectations and my self deprecating thoughts, I started to see the energy waves.
Slowly they shifted into an actual color.
I was seeing yellow.
I did this for a week, and I consistently saw yellow.
A part of me was convincing myself that I was making it up because I wanted to see my own aura. I kept this little experiment to myself.
This was right before we were about to go on a family trip to Sedona, Arizona. A place known for its’ red rock formations for beautiful hikes and as a spiritual hub full of mystics, psychics, and crystals.
We had an amazing visit and felt the town was super cute and the hikes were fun and unique with the red rock scenery.
As we drove through town, I saw a sign for “Aura Readings” and I asked my husband to pull over.
I felt a compelling need to get a picture of my aura!!!
The lady in the shop walked me to a room with special Kirlian photography equipment and had me put my hand on a metal plate for a couple of minutes. I opted for the full body aura reading so there was an image taken of me standing up.
Once the process was complete, she asked me if I had any guesses about what color my aura might be.
I told her about my recent attempts to see my aura and that I was seeing yellow around my head. I expressed this with no confidence, like obviously I was just seeing stuff.
I also mentioned that I had been feeling a sense of stuck energy in my lower abdomen — a heaviness that I felt but hadn’t perceived as a color.
She looked at me with a smile and flipped the screen so I could see it.
This is what I saw:
SHUT THE FRONT DOOR!!!
See that yellow around my head?
I excitedly burst out “ I wasn’t making it up!!”
Then she shows me the body picture:
At that time, I knew very little about chakras (energy centers) or auras but I did immediately see that there was this large circular bulb of energy (pinkish-red) in my lower abdomen.
That was exactly where I was feeling this sense of ‘stuck’ energy in my body.
With my skepticism faded, I dove into the world of aura’s when I returned from my trip.
What is an Aura
An aura is an energy field that surrounds all living things, including humans, animals, and plants.
This field extends a few inches to several feet from the body and is often described as a luminous glow or subtle light.
Auras are considered to be a reflection of a person’s emotional, mental, and spiritual health.
In Eastern practices like Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine, the concept of energy fields aligns with ideas about chakras and meridians — pathways through which life energy flows.
If you are questioning the concept of an energy field around you, let me ask you this..
Have you ever walked into an event and felt magnetically drawn to a someone you have never met.
Before you know it you guys are chatting it up and new BFFs?
Have you experienced the opposite?
Walked in somewhere and just wanted to move away from a certain individual who you know nothing about.
This doesn’t make anyone good or bad.
This just demonstrates that we have different energy signatures and some are compatible with you at that moment and some are not.
Here’s the thing: your aura constantly changes!
As you feel differently your energetic field changes with it.
So don’t ever label yourself with an aura reading — this is all fluid unless you stay in the exact same emotional state every second of every day for your the rest of your life.
I use this app called AURLA to image my aura and it changes colors as I feel differently.
I find this to be a fun and useful way for me to keep pace with my thoughts and emotions.
Here’s a snapshot of today:
The HeartMath Institute has conducted large amounts of research on our electromagnetic signatures.
They have provided data to show that we have a measurable electromagnetic field around us that can extend up to several feet.
Our heart is the most powerful producer of these signals.

The Meaning of Aura Colors
Different colors within an aura correspond to various aspects of a person’s well-being, emotions, and personality.
The colors and their shades and hues can be interpreted in a granular way but I would suggest you consult an aura professional for that.
At a high level, here are some common meanings for the colors:
Red: Associated with energy, passion, and a fiery nature. It can indicate strong willpower, determination, and physical vitality. It may also suggest strong emotions, such as anger or excitement.
Orange: Linked to creativity, enthusiasm, and a proactive attitude. It is often seen as the color of action and positivity, reflecting someone who is outgoing and dynamic.
Yellow: Represents sunny dispositions, charisma, and confidence. It is associated with intellectual energy, clarity of thought, and joyfulness.
Green: Connected to love, compassion, and nurturing qualities. It often signifies balance, harmony, and growth. Green is also associated with healing and a connection to nature.
Pink: Reflects kindness, caring, and unconditional love. It is often seen as a soft, gentle color that suggests affection and emotional sensitivity.
Blue: Symbolizes power, insight, and calmness. It is connected to communication, truth, and the flow of ideas. Blue can also reflect a deep sense of peace and spirituality.
Purple: Indicates intuition, empathy, and spiritual awareness. Purple is often associated with higher consciousness, imagination, and psychic abilities.
Indigo: Reflects deep sensitivity, empathy, and strong intuition. It suggests a connection to the subconscious mind and often indicates someone who is introspective and spiritually aware.
White: Represents purity, wisdom, and spiritual connection. It is often seen as the color of enlightenment and protection, reflecting a high level of spiritual development.
Black: Typically associated with exhaustion, feeling low, or being emotionally drained. In some interpretations, black can also suggest a protective shield or an indication of unresolved issues.
Rainbow: Indicates a highly energized and busy state. A rainbow aura is often seen as a sign of someone who is confident, capable of juggling multiple tasks, and has a strong, vibrant energy field.
Cleansing and Protecting Your Aura
Just as we take care of our physical bodies, we should also care for our auras (energetic body).
Simple ways are to ensure you are working on your mindset so that you can keep negative thoughts at bay.
“The soul becomes dyed with the color of its thoughts.”
— Marcus Aurelius
Negative thoughts and negative beliefs are the root of all our negative feelings.
The way to rid those feelings is to work them backwards.
Here’s a simple but profound question you should ask yourself when in a moment of negative emotion:
What must I believe to be true that is creating this feeling?
Let that be the first of many questions you ask to work out the root cause of the emotion. Remember beliefs can be replaced by better feeling ones.
Here are a few additional ways to cleanse and protect your energy field:
Meditation: Set aside a few minutes a day to still your mind and your thoughts. Just allow yourself to exist and nothing else. It helps the monkey brain settle down.
Breathwork: Focused breathing techniques ensure you get the proper amount of oxygen and balance out the triggers to your stress hormones; shallow breathing being a trigger.
Yoga or Qi-gong: Our body houses energy centers, called chakras, and it is possible for these to get blocked. It is important to keep our bodies moving and the deliberate motions of both these ancient arts are intended to get our energetic meridians and chakras unblocked to keep the energy flowing.
Smudging: Using sage, palo santo, or other sacred herbs to “smudge” or cleanse your aura is a traditional practice in many cultures. The smoke is believed to purify and protect the energy field.
Salt Baths: Soaking in a bath with sea salt or Epsom salts can help draw out negative energy and provide you with any ions your body might need for balanced heath. When you feel better you ‘feel’ better.
If you’re wondering if I can still see my aura without technology- I actually haven’t tried since I downloaded the app.
Currently I feel more clairsentience (clear feeling) than clairvoyance (clear seeing).
Maybe I will read up on ‘level 3’ of visualizing auras and build on what I had done before.
I heard of this grandpa that used to go to church every Sunday, not for religious reasons, but to watch people’s colorful auras dance when they were singing together in harmony.
How cool would it be to able to see that?!
I have shifted from being a skeptic to one that actually uses the concept for guidance for inner work.
I believe our auras are a reflection of the connection between our mind, body, and spirit. Once that changes as we do.
There is so much more to life than meets the eye if you choose to seek it.

Yes! You do a wonderful job, explaining tools that can be used to heightened ones sensitivity to auras. I too have had very similar experiences. My trip to Sedona was incredibly insightful. I met a a clairvoyant, I was called to meet. The energy there vibrates at a very clear undulation. It's like a bridge. :)
